AI is no longer something children only hear about. Many are already using it for homework, questions, creativity and everyday curiosity.
A 2026 Common Sense Media survey of 1,204 children ages 9 to 17 found that 86% had used AI, and nearly one in four used it every day. More than four in ten also said a parent or guardian had never talked with them about AI safety.

For parents, AI safety for kids is no longer just about blocking inappropriate content or setting a timer.
A better question is:
What kind of AI access is right for my child, and what protections should already be in place?
Parental controls matter. But they should be an extra layer of protection, not the only thing making an AI experience suitable for a younger user.
Why AI Parental Controls Matter More in 2026
Many families are still working out what rules make sense for children's AI use. Governments and schools are asking similar questions.
In August 2026, the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee advanced several proposed measures related to children and AI, including the CHATBOT Act, the Youth AI Privacy Act and the Children's Artificial Intelligence Toy Safety Act.
These proposals are not yet nationwide law. But they show where the debate is focusing.
The proposed CHATBOT Act, for example, includes family accounts and parental consent for teen users. Other proposals put greater attention on children's privacy and how AI services handle data from younger users.

AI for younger users should not simply be an adult product with a parental-control menu added later.
Start With Built-In Protection
When comparing AI tools, parents may naturally start by asking, "What parental controls does it have?"
There is a more important question to ask first:
What protections are already active before I change any settings?
Children will not always use AI with a parent sitting beside them. Strong default protections therefore matter.
Depending on the service and the child's age, that can include clearer age requirements, more careful handling of sensitive topics, stronger privacy defaults and limits on features that may not be suitable for younger users.
Parents should still be able to add their own boundaries where appropriate, but they should not have to build the entire safety system themselves.
Parental controls should strengthen safer design, not make up for the absence of it.
Which Parental Controls Actually Matter?
A long settings page is not automatically a good parental-control system.
What matters is whether parents can manage the parts of the experience that affect their child most:
- Access and age: Can parents manage account access or give consent where appropriate?
- Time: Are there schedules, quiet hours or other ways to set healthy boundaries around use?
- Privacy: Is it clear what information is stored, remembered or shared, and can those settings be managed?
- Sensitive content and features: Are stronger protections available for content or functions that may not be suitable for younger users?
Different families will care about different controls.
A parent concerned about late-night use may value quiet hours. A family introducing AI for schoolwork may care more about privacy, how answers are presented and whether the child is still doing the thinking.
Privacy and Parental Oversight Are Not the Same Thing
Children may share surprisingly personal information with AI.
A homework question can turn into a conversation about friendships, school pressure or family problems. Younger users may not always recognise which details are better kept private.
Parents should therefore understand some basic things before a child starts using an AI service. Are conversations stored? Does the service remember previous information? Can that information be deleted? What privacy choices are available?
At the same time, keeping children safe does not necessarily mean reading every conversation they have.
Parents need meaningful safety tools without turning every AI interaction into constant surveillance.
For older children and teenagers, the goal is to find a reasonable balance between independence, privacy and appropriate family oversight.
AI Should Help Children Think, Not Replace Thinking
AI can explain a difficult idea in seconds. The harder question is whether the child is still doing the thinking.
This question is now influencing school policy too.
For the 2026–27 school year, New York City Public Schools introduced a moratorium on student-facing generative AI for students from 2K through grade 8. High school students have more limited, guided access through approved programs.
The policy puts particular emphasis on independent thinking, human interaction, curiosity and creativity.
Those priorities matter outside the classroom too.
There is a real difference between asking AI:
"Help me understand this."
and:
"Do this for me."
AI can be useful for explaining an idea, brainstorming, asking follow-up questions or helping a child explore something they do not yet understand.
But if it regularly replaces reading, problem-solving or the child's own first attempt, the child may get the result without building the skill behind it.
For children, useful AI should support curiosity and thinking rather than make thinking unnecessary.
When AI Starts Feeling Like a Person
Conversational AI can sound patient, friendly and understanding.
That makes it easy to use, but it can also blur an important line for younger users.
Children should understand something simple:
AI can sound like a person without being one.
It does not know a child in the way a parent, teacher, friend or another trusted person does.
If a conversation moves into serious emotional, health or safety concerns, support from a real person should remain the priority.

Parental Controls Are One Layer, Not the Whole Answer
There is no single setting that makes AI right for every child.
Good protection starts with an AI experience that takes the user's age into account. Parental controls can then add another layer where those controls are available.
Settings still cannot replace conversation.
Children need to know that AI can be useful without always being correct, that personal information should be shared carefully and that some questions are better taken to a parent, teacher or another trusted person.
AI is becoming part of schoolwork, apps and children's devices. Parents do not have to choose between unrestricted access and avoiding AI completely.
The goal is to give children the right amount of access, with the right safeguards, at the right age.
