More apps are trying to work out whether the person using them is a child, a teenager or an adult.

For parents, that can raise an obvious question:

How does an app actually know how old my child is?

A birthday entered during signup is no longer always enough. Platforms are increasingly using other signals, age-estimation tools and verified account information to decide which age group a user belongs to.

There is a practical reason for this. A platform cannot reliably apply teen content limits, safer communication settings or parental-consent rules if it does not know which users are children.

But identifying a child's age is only the beginning.

Age verification matters only if knowing a child's age leads to a genuinely more age-appropriate experience.

That means parents should understand not only how an app checks age, but also what information it uses, what happens to that information and what protections actually change afterward.

Why Age Verification Matters More in 2026

Online services have asked users for their age for years. What is changing is how much they rely on that information to decide which experience a child receives.

Meta, for example, has expanded its age-assurance technology to identify accounts that may belong to teenagers even when the user has entered an adult birthday. Accounts believed to belong to teens can then be placed into age-appropriate Teen Account protections.

Microsoft is taking a different approach. Its new Windows Age API can give apps an age range, such as 13–15 or 16–17, without sharing the user's full date of birth. This can help apps provide an age-appropriate experience while limiting how much personal information needs to be shared.

Regulators are paying closer attention too. In September 2026, Ireland's media regulator opened a formal investigation into X over concerns about whether its age-assurance measures are effective enough to prevent children from seeing certain adult content.

Age is becoming something platforms are expected to act on, not simply a box users tick when creating an account.

Age Verification, Age Estimation and Age Assurance: What's the Difference?

These terms are often used together, but they do not mean exactly the same thing.

Age verification generally means confirming that someone meets a particular age requirement using stronger evidence, such as an identity document or verified account information.

Age estimation does not necessarily confirm an exact birthday. Instead, technology may estimate whether someone is likely to fall within a particular age range.

Age assurance is the broader term. It can include self-declared age, age estimation, verification and other methods used to decide whether a user is likely to be a child, teenager or adult.

For parents, the most important point is simpler than the terminology:

An age check does not always mean uploading an ID, and an age estimate does not always mean identifying who the person is.

How Do Apps Estimate or Verify a Child's Age?

There is no single way to check someone's age online. Different services use different methods, and some combine several signals rather than relying on one check alone.

A Birthday Entered by the User

The simplest method is still asking for a date of birth when an account is created.

This is easy for families and requires very little additional information. But it also has an obvious weakness: a child can enter a different birthday.

That is why many platforms no longer rely only on the age a user enters.

Account and Activity Signals

Some platforms look for clues within an account that suggest the user may be younger than the birthday on the profile.

Meta, for example, says its age-assurance technology can look at contextual signals such as birthday celebrations, mentions of school grades, posts, comments, bios and captions. It can also use general visual clues from photos and videos when assessing whether an account may belong to someone underage.

There is an important distinction here: this is not necessarily facial recognition.

Meta says its system does not create a facial fingerprint or identify the specific person in an image. Instead, it looks for general clues that may suggest someone is underage.

If a platform believes the age on an account may be wrong, it can then ask the user to complete a stronger age check.

Facial Age Estimation

Some services use a camera-based age check to estimate which age group a user is likely to belong to.

Roblox, for example, requires an age check for access to chat. Its facial age-estimation process uses the device's camera to estimate a user's age group, which then helps determine which communication features and age groups they can access.

Facial age estimation is designed to estimate age rather than establish a person's identity.

Roblox says images and video used for facial age estimation are deleted immediately after they have been securely processed.

No age-estimation system will be right every time, which is why users also need a way to correct an inaccurate result.

Age Information From a Device or Trusted Account

Another approach is to let a trusted account or operating system provide an age range to an app.

Microsoft's Windows Age API, introduced in 2026, is an example. Instead of giving an app a user's full date of birth, Windows can provide an age category such as under 10, 10–12, 13–15, 16–17 or 18+.

An app can then use that age range to decide which experience or protections should apply.

An app may not need to know a child's exact birthday in order to provide an age-appropriate experience.

What About Your Child's Privacy?

Age checks create an important privacy question.

A service may need greater confidence that a user is a child, teenager or adult. But that does not automatically mean every app needs a child's full birthday, identity document or other detailed personal information.

The Windows approach shows one possible model. An app can receive an age range instead of a complete date of birth and still use that information to provide different protections.

Other types of age checks may require more information. A facial age-estimation process may need a selfie or short video. A stronger verification process may sometimes require identity information.

Parents should therefore look at what happens to the information used for an age check:

  • What information does the service actually need?
  • Is it verifying identity or only estimating an age range?
  • How long is the information kept?
  • Is it shared with other services?
  • Can it be deleted after the age check is complete?

Better age assurance should not automatically mean sharing more personal information with more companies.

A good system should use the information needed for the age decision while limiting unnecessary exposure of a child's personal data.

What If an Age Check Gets It Wrong?

Age estimation can make mistakes.

A teenager may be placed in an older or younger age group than they actually belong to. Different lighting, image quality or other conditions may also affect some estimation methods.

That is why parents should look for a clear way to correct an inaccurate result or complete another form of age verification when necessary.

Age checks can improve protection, but they cannot carry the whole safety system on their own.

What Should Parents Look For After an Age Check?

It is easy to focus on how sophisticated an age-checking system sounds.

For families, a more useful question is:

What actually changes after the platform decides my child is 13, 15 or 17?

Look at the experience that follows the age check.

  • Does the child see different or more restricted content?
  • Are adults or strangers limited in how they can contact younger users?
  • Do chat or communication features change?
  • Are privacy settings more protective by default?
  • Do certain features require parental consent?

If identifying a 13-year-old creates almost the same experience as identifying a 25-year-old, the age check itself is doing very little for child safety.

The protections that follow the age check matter more than how impressive the age-checking technology sounds.

Age Verification Is a Starting Point, Not the Finish Line

Age assurance is becoming a more important part of children's digital safety in 2026.

It can help platforms place younger users into more appropriate experiences, limit certain forms of communication and apply different privacy or content settings.

But knowing that someone is 12, 14 or 16 is only useful if the service does something meaningful with that information.

Parents should therefore look beyond the age-check screen itself. What protections follow? What information was needed to make the decision? And does the experience genuinely change for a younger user?
